Hello There!

Postby Svaska » Wed Mar 03, 2010 6:47 pm

Hi. I'm Svaska (Mariah). Um, I'm a friend of Tirwynn's. I'm thinking of trying a Red Kite sort of bird scavenger, but I'm having difficulty finding any sort of information or general rules about scavengers in general, and I want to be aware of what I can and can't do, so any information in that vein would be greatly appreciated.

So yes, Hi!

Scavengers are humanoids with animal characteristics. There is a birdlike race already called Biata so you should be aware that in some places you can't play a bird scavenger, to prevent confusion. At Piedmont, we let people play bird scavengers, but you have to wear a beak phys rep of some sort so we know you're a bird scavenger and not a biata. :)

As far as unusal rules: Scavengers exist onn the edge of civilization so they're strong but often uncivilized. You can buy resist toxin as a racial bonus.

Scavengers can not use two-handed blunt or two-handed edged weapons.

Scholarly skills cost scavengers twice the points. (So a scavenger scholar can learn to read and write skill for 6 pts and a scavenger fighter has to pay a whole 12 points - holy cow)

Scavengers -are- a ton of fun though and the best way to tailor the perfect character you've always wanted to play to you. ^^ If you don't just hte scavenger disadvantages, take a look at the Biata... I've always thought they were pretty cool

A correction, if I may.

Bird scavengers can be played in the same areas as Biata. There is a simple factor.

Have a beak. This can be done with the theatre masks with beaks, or by obtaining another mask-type with one (the theatre masks are more aesthetically pleasing in my opinion.) This way you avoid all confusion as far as being mistaken for a Biata. Keep in mind the only main factor for Biata is the feathery eyebrows. Full face make-up and mask make it more than painfully obvious you're a scavenger.

I'd love to see a Red Kite scavenger. As for the culture, a good tactic is to look up the way the animal acts and tweak it to how a humanoid version would act.

Keep in mind, bird scavengers cannot fly. This is because you cannot physically represent flying (if you can, well holy crap)

If you're going to base your character more on a bird than a person, I suggest a scavenger. They're a fun and adaptable race. I personally play a scavenger scholar (despite the build costs) and love her to bits.

Welcome to Nero ^w^ ~

One of my friends on deviantart makes leather beak masks, her etsy shop is here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/windfalcon The ones she has up there now are super fancy and therfore somewhat expensive, but I'm sure she would take a comission to make something similar. She has also talked about giving classes, so she might just be able to tell you how to make one yourself, if you're interested.

First off, welcome to Nero as well. As for being a red-kite scavenger, I personally approve of it. Since it means there will be another bird-scavenger around.

Other than that, I'm sure you'll be able to find me. I'm the mystic wood elf with the goatee and look a bit like a pirate.
Friend to all, and gatherer of things shiny.
